This event, held every year on the first Sunday of May, can be fun for speed lovers. Both full marathons and half marathons this weekend are “net downhill” (there are hills), but runners will finish more than 100 feet lower than they started. It is one of the three marathons that make up the “Beach Cities Challenge”, which also includes the Long Beach and Surf City marathons. There is also a 5 km race on Saturday night, and a half-marathon version of the race will be held on Sunday morning. The 19th annual Orange County Marathon kicked off on Sunday and tens of thousands of runners are expected to attend this year's event. Adults, children and even dogs supported their friends and family in the race, which starts on Fashion Island and ends at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
